Sanitary Sewer Line

The sanitary sewer line carries waste water or sewage away from an individuals home. Toilets, sinks, dishwashers and washing machines create waste water. Each item that creates waste water is attached to the sanitary sewer line through the plumbing in the house. The sanitary sewer is attached to a sewer main. The sewer main runs directly to the sewage treatment plant.

Storm Sewer

A storm sewer collects storm water and removes it from an area. Other types of water that a storm sewer collects includes water that is being removed from a basement with a sump pump and water run-off from cleaning items outside with a hose. The collection point to storm sewers can be seen while driving down the road in towns. The large openings in the curb and gutter allow for the water to drain from the street directly into the storm sewer.

Septic Sewer

Rural homes and some homes within city limits have their own collection tank for waste water. This tank is called a septic tank. Septic sewer lines carry the waste water from the house to the septic tank. The septic sewer line uses the same principal as the sanitary sewer line but the waste water is not taken to a sewage treatment plant. The plumbing in the house is all connected to the septic sewer line.
